Recently we’ve had some users praise us for the fact that we offer only low and PG free e-liquid. These comments remind us that our e-liquids offer options that other companies don’t, and we take pride in that. Unlike many brands, our quality e-liquids do not rely on the use of propylene glycol (PG). Instead, we make all of our e-liquids from natural vegetable glycerin (VG). Our e-liquids are typically made up of 90 percent VG and 10 percent PG, coming from the flavor extracts.
Exactly what makes our VG e-liquids different from PG based products is not always as clear as the liquids themselves, but can be crucial to users who experience negative reactions to PG. Aside from being the more hypoallergenic product, there are many other factors that distinguish VG from PG.
So what is PG and why don’t we rely on it? Propylene glycol is easily the most common base for e-liquids, and is the base of most commercial brands. This is because it is a widely available synthetic compound. This liquid is food safe, mostly tasteless, and quick to absorb into the wick; making it a decent candidate for e-liquids. It vapes quickly and hits the throat hard. Users used to the hard hit from smoking will find a similar sensation from PG. Despite this hard hit, PG based eliquids tend to produce a slightly thinner vapor.
Though PG has become something of an industry standard, our products use vegetable glycerin (VG) as a base. Vegetable glycerin is a naturally occurring compound which helps bond together certain lipid compounds in plants and animals. Food safe glycerin is sourced from fatty plant material, largely soy and palm, and has been used as a food safe additive for decades. Glycerin is used as a sweetener and thickening agent in foods and beverages, and as an additive to many hair and skincare products. You have probably been consuming glycerin for your entire life without knowing it.
As an eliquid, VG has the advantage of providing extremely dense hits at lower temperatures than its PG counterparts. While some users prefer the hard throat hit from PG products, our VG eliquids are slightly more gentle on the throat. We also offer products with some PG content to provide a bit of that hard throat hit.
The vapor VG gives you will be much more dense. Users who wish to produce large clouds of vapor easily will love our VG eliquid. The natural thickness of VG also assures that it will last and vape off slower than high PG mixtures.
We also find VG to be the perfect compliment to many of our flavors. This is because unlike PG, which is mostly flavorless, VG has a natural sweetness. This enhances the sweet flavors of our VG eliquids without the need to add an additional sweetener.
Another major reason users prefer our glycerin based products and PG free e-liquid is the fact that PG e-liquids are much more likely to produce allergic reactions in users. Unlike VG, PG is a synthetic chemical that many users have difficulty consuming. High levels of PG can irritate the eyes, throat, gums, and skin for some users.
In fact, some estimates state that 1 in 10 people are likely to experience some form of negative reaction or sensitivity to PG products, especially when using 100% PG or eliquids with a PG heavy ratio. This has become such an issue that the NACDG, a watchdog group for skin allergens, named PG its allergen of the year in 2018. Given the increasing frequency of people finding they experience discomfort from PG, many customers need to find alternatives that still provide a satisfying vaping experience. For those experiencing these kinds of reactions, our VG based e-liquids and PG free e-liquid are a perfect solution.
In addition to its health benefits, it is worth noting that VG, as a naturally occurring compound, breaks down much easier than PG products. PG products consume large quantities of oxygen as they degrade, robbing it from the atmosphere and organisms in waterways. Because glycerin is so common in living things, it does not have the same kind of impact on the environment. This means that our products are not only better for our customers skin, but they have less impact on the world at large.
Despite the fact that it is natural, it is possible to have a negative reaction to VG. These reactions tend to be much more mild than reactions to PG. If you have an allergy to glycerin, you would probably know it already as glycerin is a far more common in consumer products. It's pretty likely you have actually come in contact with a glycerin based product already today. THe long history of using glycerin safely in commercial products is just one more reason we feel confident using it in our e-liquids.
We regularly receive feedback from our customers for the fact that our e-liquids provide a thick and tasty vapor without the irritation and discomfort of high PG brands. Though no single product can ever offer what every user needs, we are proud to offer our VG based products to provide a more comfortable vaping experience for our customers. Even for consumers who enjoy the hit of PG products, the use of our VG e-liquids might not only produce more of a thick and satisfying vapor; but offer some relief for your throat and skin.
SMAX E-Liquid takes pride in offering vape juice that is safer to consume. VG is found in many foods we eat on a regular basis, and works perfectly as a sweetener for people who have an allergic reaction to PG. Our creation of a Max VG line was about offering the cleanest formula possible, not something that was high in PG.
